Premarin is the commercial name under which conjugated estrogen is marketed. It is not a single compound. Premarin is a combination of a number of naturally derived compounds. This medication is generally used to supply estrogen to those women with less estrogen content and thus cure the problems associated with that.
Using Premarin can be considered as a hormone replacement therapy. This drug is widely used in women who had hysterectomy after menopause in order to treat hot flashes and burning, itching and dryness of vagina and the surrounding areas. Sometimes it is used with pills with progestin content in order for treatment of osteoporosis in women without hysterectomy. There are some other uses which are not very popular. These include treatment of metastatic breast cancer in men and women and prostate cancer in men. It may also be used by those women whose body does not produce enough estrogen due to hypogonadism, castration or ovarian failure.
Premarin cream is available with an applicator. The cream is to be filled into the applicator and released deep into the vagina. Common side effects that occur while using Premarin are dizziness; nausea; or vaginal burning, discomfort or irritation. Sudden head ache; breast pain or tenderness; stomach upset, pain, or bloating; persistent nausea; vomiting; unexplained weight changes; unusual vaginal discharge/itching/smell; more/less interest in sex; or hair loss; mental/mood changes (e.g. severe depression, memory loss, or confusion); severe dizziness or fainting; sudden severe headache; one-sided weakness; slurred speech; vision changes (e.g. change in contact lens fit, loss of vision, or double vision); chest pain; shortness of breath; pain or swelling of the hands, legs, or feet; calf pain, swelling, or tenderness; breast lumps; changes in vaginal bleeding (e.g. spotting, breakthrough bleeding, prolonged bleeding, or absence of menstrual period); seizure; yellowing of eyes or skin; irregular heartbeat; or muscle cramps are considered to be more serious side effects and demand immediate medical attention.
